3 Podcasts, The Links, and a Story Only Told Here...

The Sports-Casters Have an Ambitious Week

The Sports-Casters worked extra hard this week producing three original pieces of media. Last week was the first time The Sports-Casters posted two podcasts in a week, and this week they upped the ante again. Below is a description of each podcast with the direct link to that specific show.

Episode 13

Episode 13 has a little backstory that you will only read on this blog. On Tuesday, Don and I met at the studio at 5:00 and prepared to do a spot with Zach from Accuscore that was to feature a guest appearance by, "The Ed." We called Zach, and he needed a little more time. We called him again at 5:30 and everything was set to go. We interviewed Zach for a solid twenty minutes and then brought along the end and proceeded for a bit longer. Afterwords, we had two other interviews to record and some other stuff (3Things, Pick4, ect.) to do that took until around 9:30. When we went to edit episode 13 together the interview with Zach and Ed had vanished. We scrambled to get a hold of Zach and Ed to see if they could re-do it, but only Ed was available.

Don and I were very frustrated with the first technical disaster in the history of The Sports-Casters, but there was nothing we could do about it. Ed was nice enough to give us another chance, and Zach will be back next week to talk about our bet and an Accuscore baseball preview.

Episode 13, despite any technical  disaster, turned out to be one of our best episodes yet.

Here is the rundown:

Intro/3Things
An interview with Ed Miller
A Book Club Update
An interview with Sweeny Murti fro WFAN in New York
Pick4

Baseball Bonus Show #1

Baesball Bonus Show #1 was recorded Tuesday night and focusses on The New York Yankees.  We tracked down the proprietors from the best two Yankee's blogs on the internet, Alex Belth from the BronxBanterBlog and Travis Goldman from the PinstripeAlley blog as part of the SB Nation.

Alex Belth ended up being a home run when we discovered he had worked on The Big Lebowski, the Ken Burns documentary "Baseball" and organized an incredible book of essays about Yankee Stadium called, "Lasting Yankee Stadium Memories: Unforgettable Tales from the House that Ruth Built." The conversation was fascinating, entertaining, and listening back it goes by in a flash.

Travis Goldman went deep into the Yankee roster with us and gave a very detailed interview similar to the one we did with Sweeny Murti on Episode 13.

Here is the rundown:

Intro/3Things (Yankees Edition)
An interview with Alex Belth
A Yankees Book Club Edition
An interview with Travis Goldman
An Over/Under segment featuring Yankees over/unders

Athlete Spotlight #1: Carter Camper

At the last minute, we were able to secure an interview with NCAA Hockey star Carter Camper from the University of Miami (OH). Carter is the first athlete to sit down with us for an in-depth interview that covered his career as a junior hockey player all the way to Miami's early exit from the NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament last weekend.

Carter is a great kid from Rocky River, Ohio. He was very candid, open, and truthful. He answered every question with class and handled his business like a seasoned pro.

I have a handful of links to share that are meant to compliment the three podcasts that we released this week.

  • Sweeny Murti is a solid follow on twitter if you are interested on Yankees information. He has been on the beat since 2001 and his information is usually first and fast.
  • The Ed has his own website.
  • Steve mentioned that he was going through the 1998 edition of the Best American Sports Writing Series.
  • Dont forget to check out Accuscore. Our buddy Zach has an interesting column about the odds that the Final Four would be what it is.
  • Alex Belth has a fantastic blog about the Yankees and living in New York City.
  • Travis Goldman runs the Yankess blog on SB Nation.
  • Steve announced a contest that could have you reading this book by the beginning of next week.
  • Steve also announced that this book will be the Book Club book of the month for April.
  • Alex Belth has published a book about Yankee Stadium and a collection of columns by sports writer Pat Jordan.
  • Steve is now contributing blogs for the New Orleans Saints blog on the SB Nation. He has posted two articles that have a combined 150 comments in the fist week.
  • The books recommended on the Yankees podcast are The Yankees Years by Tom Verducci, The Last Night of the Yankees Dynasty by Buster Olney, The Last Boy by Jane Leavy, and the Alex Belth book mentioned above.
  • Almost everyone asked mention this book as a must read for Yankees fans.
  • Carter Camper has some unbelievable numbers at college and was a fantastic student
On a personal note: Our poor little doggie Brady is out for the season after a torn ACL hunting in the woods last Sunday. He limped around our house Sunday and was a sad little dog. He cuddled on the couch and asked if he could say goodnight to everyone.

So, Say goodnight Brady....

The Podcast, The Tournament, NCAA Hockey, Jeff Duncan, Some Links

The Sports-Casters Make History

We made a little history this week by producing two podcasts in the same week for the first time. Anthony Day (Waterloo Blackhawks) was a special guest host stepping up for Donnie who was stuck in the basement with a case of scurvy

Episode 11 - A totally college episode features 3Things (college only), an interview with Ken Schott from the Daily Gazette of Schenectady, a book club update (check out this article), Zaccuscore returns to check on our NCAA tournament bet, and a college only Pick4 ends the show.

Episode 12- A totally pro episode features 3Things (Pro only), an interview with Jonah Keri the author of The Extra 2%, a book club update (check out this article), Dan Kadar from MockingTheDraft, and a pro only Pick4 ends the historic week.

4 Hours of College Basketball

For maybe the first time this season, I spent four straight hours watching basketball. Going into the night, the teams, some of the players, and even one of the coaches were really interesting to me. I am no basketball writer so if you are looking for a breakdown of the X-O's that resulted in Duke's shit getting pushed in, you are at the wrong spot. Instead, here are a few things I noticed while watching the games:

  • I didn't want it to happen but, Jimmer got tired. Down the stretch, you could just tell he didn't have the lift in his legs that landed him on the cover of SI for two straight weeks.

  • San Diego St. and BYU spend much of the season in the top 10. Many of the skeptics claimed that the only good teams they played were each other. It is interesting that they would both be eliminated from the tournament around the same time in Anaheim and New Orleans.
  • Kemba Walker is the best player in the Nation. I don't think it's close.
  • It's amazing to me that a small school from Indiana has made a Final-Four and an Elite-Eight in back to back seasons.
  • This tournament seems to be headed for a Kansas vs. Ohio St. final. I almost can't see it any other way. Kansas had their bracket open up for them last weekend when the 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,and 10 seeds in their bracket all went home after one weekend. Only 2 mid-majors and Florida St.stand in their way of playing in a Final Four. Ohio St. has North Carolina looming in what could be the best game of the round of eight.
  • If I could pick my final four now, Ohio St, UCONN, Florida, Kansas.
  • Did Coach K die at some point during the beginning of the second half tonight? I kept waiting for him to call a timeout at some point to try and break the momentum of a surging Arizona team.
  • Is there any chance that Oklahoma could lure Brad Stevens down to Norman to replace Jeff Capel?
  • Florida is a much better team than the talking heads gave them credit for on Selection Sunday.
Time for the Real Tournament to Begin

I find myself all jacked up to watch the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament this season. Here are some predictions and things to watch for this weekend as the field gets trimmed from 16 to a Frozen Four.

  • The number 1 seeds are very strong this year. Miami (OH) is loaded with senior leadership, top end scoring, and tournament experience. Andy Miele and Carter Camper are both undersized, but the things they can do with the puck at full speed are NHL quality. Boston College is loaded with players who won this tournament last season and can score a lot of goals in a short period of time. North Dakota finished the season #1 and Matt Frattin has 35 goals an unheard of total for college hockey. And then their is Yale, the tournaments #1 overall seed need only beat Air Force (the worst team in the tournament), and the UMD/UNion winner to make the Final Four. Senior goalie, Ryan Rondeau will be looking to bounce back after a disastrous tournament performance against BC last year.
  • Despite the fact that the #1 seeds are so good, this tournament is loaded with good teams. Only one automatic qualifier (Air-Force) needed the AQ to qualify.
  • There is a nice group of freshman to check out this weekend. Jaden Schwartz might be in the NHL next year. Anders Lee, Mike Voran and Tj Tynan all play considerable minutes for Notre Dame. Chase Balisy had 30 points for Western Michigan, and Jason Zucker scored 20 goals for Devner.
  • Union is making their first ever appearance in the tournament. They could be scary because they have nothing to lose. On the other hand, are they just happy to be there?
  • Did you hear about Western Michigan and what good kids they have?
  • My Final Four: Chalk baby, Miami, Yale, North Dakota, and BC
  • My Champ: Miami (OH)
  • Hobey Baker: Sadly, Miele and Camper will split votes and Koko B. Ware Matt Frattin will win.

Book Club Update and Announcement

A few book club related pieces of news:

  • Our very spirited look at the Greatest American Sports Writing Series is coming to an end. The wrap up show is on April 5, 2011. Glenn Stout, the editor of the series, is confirmed. Jeff Duncan the author of a piece from the 2006 book is also confirmed. I am working on a few other others to join us and talk about their contributions to the series.
  • The book of the month for April will be the book pictured above. From Bags to Riches by Jeff Duncan is so much more than a football book.
  • Jeff is going to join us on the May 3 show to talk about From Bags to Riches.
  • I have a few copies of the book to give away to fans. Contact me if you are interested in being one of the fans to get a free book.

  • I have a feeling that this interview was translated from Russian and some of the answers ended up falling a little flat. Or, Pavel Bure agreed to this interview, drank a bottle of liquid lorazepam, and started talking.
  • One thing that Terry Pegula has brought to the Sabres organization in a short time is class.
  • Happy 10th Birthday MAC OS X
  • College Hockey has its first iPhone App.
  • Verizon wants to sell you an iPad1 for the price of a kindle.
  • This needs to happen for the iPhone very fast.
  • I find this website to be really unique and interesting.
  • I have been known to enjoy the sights and sounds of Mr. Eddie Vedder
  • Soundgarden released their first live album on Tuesday. You can pick it up on iTunes for $9.99 and it includes five songs from various sound-checks on the tour.
  • Los Angelas, Nashville, Chicago, Anaheim, Dallas and Calgary. 6 teams separated by 5 points fighting for 4 playoff spots

Say goodnight Bella (We babysit her in July)

Podcast Twits, Top 3 Apps

The Podcast is Growing...

I cant help but think that The Sports-Casters will someday have an audience that at this very moment, I can't fathom. Don and I started this project only two and a half months ago. Sure, the guests have always been solid, and form a technical standpoint TSC has always been polished beyond its years, but that doesn't guarantee listeners. That is what we are learning. We are learning how to gain listeners. We are figuring out how to carry momentum from one podcast to the next. Sometimes, I am stunned by the people that don't listen to the podcast. I compare it to an election. Every money grubbing, lying, underachieving politician to ever run for office goes into election day assuming that a set group of people will absolutely vote for them. I feel that way about my podcast, when I created it, I counted on an indefinite group of people listening to the podcast every week. The thing that I have learned, and I am sure many shell shocked politicians (Truman won?) have learned as well, is that just assuming those people will listen isn't good enough. They might forget to vote/listen. They might not know how to vote/listen. The hardest one to take is that regardless of any relationship they may have with you, in the end, they couldn't give to shits about The Sports-Casters and don't listen (vote). Learning things like this have got us to the point where we are taking the proper steps that will lead us to building an audience.

Anyway, this week has been a fantastic one for the podcast. We have so many people that want to come onto the fake radio and talk to us that we are faced with another two-hour show. I like to make sure the show stays somewhere in-between an hour and an hour and a half (exceptions made for super, mega, ultra, huge podcasts). As I played with the schedule for this week's podcast and estimated the interview lengths, I realized that this podcast had no chance to stay south of 1:30. I thought about splitting it into two parts, but that was a bit of a fiasco the last time we tried it. In the end, I decided it was time for The Sports-Casters to have its first TWO show week.

So here is where we are going this week,

Season 1 Episode 11: The Sports-Casters Go Back to School
(This podcast will focus in its entirety on College Sports)

1. Show Open/3Things (college centric)
2. Interview with Zach Rosenfield
3. Book Club Update with a special look at this article about John Chaney
4. Interview with Ken Schott to discuss the NCAA Division 1 Hockey Tournament
5. Pick 4 (college only)

Season 1 Episode 12: The Sports-Casters go Pro
(This podcast will focus in its entirety on Pro Sports)

1. Show Open/3Things (Pro Sports)
2. Interview with Jonah Keri
3. Book Club Update with a special look at this article on Bill Parcells
4. Interview with Dan Kadar.
5. Pick 4 (Pro Sports Only)

The two shows will stand on their own a original individual episodes of the podcast.

Next week will the first of many baseball preview shows. Baseball will get a few preview shows and each will focus on different teams/issues/books

The first baseball show will focus on the New York Yankees.
We have booked Sweeny Murti the Yankees beat reported for WFAN in New York, Alex Beth from the Bronx Banter Blog, and Richard Deitsch from ESPN (He will discuss the media of baseball).

The following week we will focus on the other superpower in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox.

I visit (and follow on twitter) a variety of Apple Rumor sites. Some of them are better than others, but I am a whore to the products Apple makes and I want to learn as much as I can. Anyway, one site that I visit often is http://www.tuaw.com/ The reason I like this site so much is because like Apple it is visually stunning and pleases me aesthetically. I noticed a real cool recurring feature on the site that I like a lot. They go around at various shows and events and ask people for their three favorite iPhone Apps. They record the video, post it on the site, and conveniently link to the app itself in the App Store. So to end this blog, I give you my three favorite iPhone Apps. There is a slight catch, in a previous blog I listed my top five iPad apps. It wouldn't be fair to stop at 3 for the iPhone. SO (deep breath)...

Here is my list of my Top 5 Apps for the iPhone

  1. Twitter: First of all, I love twitter. The very first App I ever got to use twitter on my iphone was called Tweetie. Then they put out a massive update and called it Tweetie2. Tweetie2 was not a free update and after paying $1.99 the first time I wasn't thrilled to pay another $1.99. Of course, I did. About two months latter, Twitter bought Tweetie, changed the name to Twitter and changed the price to Free. Since then, the app just keeps getting better and better. I use it on my iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and iMax.
  2. Dropbox: Dropbox has changed how I use my various devices. Dropbox is basically a cloud program that gives you 2.0GB of free space to store stuff on their servers. Then anywhere else you have dropbox you can access the files you saved there. I can take a picture on my phone, toss it in dropbox, then go to my desktop, open dropbox and upload my picture for printing.
  3. Instacast: Instacast is a cool new way to listen to podcasts. I no longer have to go through the process of subscribing, downloading, and then syncing just to listen to 1 episode. With Instacast makes podcasting so much easier.
  4. SiriusXM: Finally you can listen to Stern with no equipment other than your iPhone.
  5. Directv; The reason this APP makes the cut is because other than twitter, it is the app that I use the most. I love having the ability to set my DVR to record without even being in the same state.

Big day tomorrow, I should go to bed. Say goodnight Brees:

The Wrestling Blog Anthony Prayed Would Neve Come

A Running Blog Documenting My First Viewing of an Awesome (Maybe) WWE DVD

First a little history. I have a love hate relationship with the world of professional wrestling. The love is simple, I love WWF wrestling from 1984-2000. I never jumped ship to other companies, never cared to watch Rick Flair or Dusty Rhodes on TBS. I turned off ESPN when they were showing Verne Gagne's AWA. But, if the WWF was on, I was watching. It could be the third time I seen an episode of the great Superstars show, and I was fully invested for the third time. The hate; Well I hate anything that any wrestling promoter has done since they split Raw and Smackdown into two separate brands with that first televised draft on Raw. That was it, I was out. I havent been back since.

I loved the WWF when I was a kid. When I was seven-years-old my Dad took me to Buffalo's War Memorial Auditorium to see the first television taping in Buffalo after the historic events of Wrestlemania III. My favorite wrestler, Rickey "The Dragon" Steamboat would defend his title against some ugly Elvis want to be and I was %100 certain that Steamboat would do some crazy shit off the top rope and he would be able to leave buffalo with the gold around his waist. It was the most glorious belt my eyes had ever seen. The Intercontinental belt was not only visually stunning, but it was competitive, it changed hands occasionally. Sure, I loved Hulk, but Hulk was a given. The IC title was different. I found out just how different on that June night in Buffalo. The Mouth of the South Jimmy Heart cheated for his man and Steamboat was cheated out of his title by Terry Buchwald. I balled on my dad's lap as if he had just told me that he and my mother didn't love me anymore. It was a total miscarriage of justice. I digress.

Anyway, Here I am at age 30. I am more excited than Gus Johnson calling a buzzer beater, to do a live blog as I view for the first time, the newest DVD in my growing collection of DVDs put forth by a company that hasn't convinced me to pay attention to their current programming in more than ten years. Wrestling is over for me the same way Our Lady Peace is over for me in music. Any music that OLP puts out in the forthcoming years will surely fall upon deaf ears at 1420 Walxk Road (I dont live in a tent, we built a house on that grass, update your shit google maps). However, on my shelf their older catalog remains waiting to be put into the Panasonic SC-HC40 for a spin down memory lane. That is exactly what the WWE has done for me. They understand that the show they air now will never include me as a viewer, and inconceivably they have figured out how to keep me as a customer. They keep releasing slick-packaged, well put together 3-disc sets of my youth. WWE DVD is making sure that I am a customer for life. One release at a time...

(I also have a cooler with all the SummerSlams not pictured)

Finally, we are up to date. You have an understanding when it comes to my love/hate relationship with the company that Vince and Hulk built. So now, we can move onto the job for tonight. I am going to attempt to keep my emotions in check and write a live blog as I watch the new DVD (pictured all the way at the top) for the first time. Here we go...

The True Story of WrestleMania

The first cool thing of the night is that this is the first WWF Blu-Ray I have ever bought. The picture on the front cover of Vince in the ring with the WM banner hanging behind him is perfect. The blow case opens to reveal a disc on both sides of the case. There is no insert related to the disc-set however they were kind enough to include a miniature movie poster of Triple H's new blockbuster, The Chaperone

1:15 AM: I inserted Disc 1 into the PS3 and sat through a trailer for  a Bobby Heenen DVD I already have, and another trailer for a set that proclaims to count down the Top 50 Superstars of All-Time. They do such a bad job with the ordering that I wish that I didn't own that set as well. The menu for the DVD gives you the option to PLAY, scroll through CHAPTERS, skip to the MATCHES, or prompt you to take a SURVEY. I clicked on this option first hoping to be able to take the survey right on the television. The bummer is that clicking on SURVEY only pops up a menu that alerts you of a website where a survey could be taken when you're not busy. Cool WM highlights loop as you decide to make a selection. I picked PLAY.

1:21 AM: Sean Michaels is the first wrestler to comment on the documentary. The first few minutes of the documentary are used to try and explain how big WrestleMania is. I am pleased to hear Hogan's voice. I know Hogan and Vince have their battles but this story could not be told without Hulk Hogan being involved.

1:26 AM: Vince and a few others explain the ancient practice of territorial wrestling and how Vince McMahon Jr ignored over 100 years of tradition to kill the territories. Rock and Wrestling and the WWF becoming a part of pop culture could be one of the biggest upsets of the 80's. Of course, Danielson scoring with Ali with an I will always be the ultimate upset in the 1980's. Andy Warhol, Cindi Lauper, Danny DeVito, and MR T. (amongst others) were the key clogs in the Rock n Wrestling project becoming a success and forcing Hulk Hogan and the WWF an accepted part of pop culture.

1:31 AM The Fink says that he came up with the name after thinking about how The Beatles referred to their explosion as BeatleMania so he suggested the explosion of the WWF should be called WrestleMania.

1:33 AM: WM1 was considered a huge risk. Many people thought that if the event failed the WWF would go out of business. The event was available only on Closed-Circuit TV.  They show a cool behind the scenes shot of Vince explaining to Hulk and Mean Gene how the broadcast would work.

1:36 AM: Over 1 million viewers watched WM 1 on Closed-Circuit TV and was considered a grand success,

1:38 AM: The documentary explains how WM2 would take place in 3 separate venues. 1 hour in New York, 1 hour in Chicago, and 1 hour in Las Angelas. The main event in Chicago was a battle royal that featured WWF wrestlers and NFL players.

1:40 AM: WM2 was also a Closed-Circuit TV event. It didn't work in Pittsburgh.

1:43 AM: Time to talk about the greatest wrestling event of all time. WM3 WM3 took place in the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit, Michigan. The Silverdome was sold for $583.000 in 2009.

1:47 AM: According to the documentary over 90,000 tickets were sold a week before the event and it was declared a sell out. The ring was elevated 1.5 to help people in the upper levels see the ring.

1:51 AM: 93, 173 was the announced attendance.

1:55 AM: "Hogan and Andre sold the event. Two individuals, Steamboat and Savage stole the event." -WWF Executive

1:58 AM: I am a little surprised they didn't spend much time discussing the Butch Reed vs. Koko B. Ware match at WM3.

2:00 AM: They skip ahead to WM23, also held in Detroit, also with record breaking attendance (for Ford Field), and also with celebrities. This time instead of the celebrities were in the matches. Instead of Steamboat vs Savage or Hogan vs. Andre, WM23 had Trump vs Vince???? I am really disappointed I missed that.

2:05 AM: The documentary smoothly transitions back to the 80's by discussing the business relationship that Trump and Vince have can be traced back to Trump bringing WM4 to Atlantic City. This was the first WM to be available exclusively on PPV. The skip over the action in WM4 because it sucked. I still want to choke whoever booked that tournament. It is maybe for another column, but if I would have booked WM4, it would have been the greatest event of all time.

2:08 AM: I am not sure what happened to WM5, but we are in Canada and Jesse is raving about the Ultimate Challenge. Edge mentions he was in the building and the documentary finds him in the stands. Patt Patterson says he witnessed the Warrior weeping after winning both titles.

2:10 AM: For the second time the documentary skips to a later WM at the same venue. The first time in Toronto the building was split between Hogan and Warrior. In WM 17 the crowd was split between Hogan and Rock.

2:11 AM: Someone says, "I think Hulk built WM." Really, you think? This same executive probably thinks Tiger Woods made golf more popular. The DVD is doing a good job highlighting the face that Hulk Hogan is such an important part of Wretlemania's past and present.

2:13 AM: Slaughter says that hogan told Vince he wouldn't work WM7 unless he worked with SGT. Slaughter. Really? I don't buy it.

2:15 AM: They will never say on this documentary, but was the venue changed for WM7 because of security or poor ticket sales?

2:17 AM: Seems like a good time for me to list my top 5 WM matches. My list only includes matches in WM1-WM14
  1. Steamboat vs Savage WM3
  2. Brett Hart vs Owen Hart WM10

  3. Brett Hart vs, Stone Cold WM13
  4. Bulldogs vs. Dream Team WM2
2:20 AM: A few talking heads are discussing how the WWF dropped the ball by not having a Hogan vs. Flair main event at WM8. Mean Gene called it a "so-so" WM.

2:21 AM: There is some really cool behind the scens footage documenting the setup for WM9 outside of Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bret Hart asks, "Where are the girls? There was supposed to be girls here.

2:23 AM: I would love it if anyone just blurted out, "Look WM9 sucked harder than any WM before and any WM after."

2:24 AM: Instead, we quickly move to WM10. The documentary points out that WM 1, 10, and 20 all took place in the famed Madison Square Garden.

2:28 AM: Fan Fest talk has me zoning out and thinking it is time for another list. How about the worst 5 matches between WM1-WM14

  1. Lawrence Taylor over Bam Bam Bigelow, WM11
  2. The Undertaker over Giant Gonzalez, WM9
  3. Doink the Clown over Crush, WM9
  4. King Kong Bundy over Special Delivery Jones WM1
  5. Butch Reed over Koko b. Ware, WM3
2:28 AM: Moving very fast now, the doc talks about including The Hall of Fame into the WM week. This Hall of Fame is a joke since Pete Rose is a member but Savage isn't.

2:30 AM: Vince refuses to admit that booking Lawrence Taylor into the main event of WM11 was the biggest joke of all time. He says instead that the athleticism of Mr. Taylor helped make the gamble pay off.

2:31 AM: I like the Iron Man Match, but it is overrates. 60 Minutes, 0 falls. Gorilla making up rules, sloppy finish.

2:33 AM: They take a minute to acknowledge just how important the Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold WM13 match was.

2:34 AM: Tripple H makes an astute statement, "Hogan built WM, Austin saved WM."

2:35 AM: Mike Tyson being a part of WM14 was debated heavily by the WWF executives. Tyson brought the mainstream media back to the WWF. Not since Hulk Hogan donned the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1985.

2:36 AM; I never want to see anyone hurt, but Tyson did a terrible job with the jab to Michaels jaw. He is also a very awkward counter.

2:44 AM: Almost an hour and a half into the documentary one of the most important people in the history of WM, Jesse Ventura, makes his first appearance to talk about how celebrities have been to the event.

2:47 AM: The triangular ladder match? It seems pretty awesome. JR sells it like a champion. Edge and Christian are underrated. I might get a set featuring their matches and check some out. I like the way they work.

2;49 AM: Astrodome record for WM X-Seven

2:50 AM: When was the last time WM was in an arena. They do an amazing job filling these huge stadiums. Will they humble themselves and have WM30 at the Garden or will they have it in Giant Stadium.

2:52 AM: This documentary is dragging. Time to wrap it up boys.

2:53 AM: Time to stroke the ego of HBK. My favorite HBK moment at a WM was at WM5 when he got squished by Akeem.

2:56 AM: WM20- NY, WM21 LA, WM22 Chicago - Very cool. Vince says after Chicago- Stadiums only.

2:57 AM: The wrestlers debate stadium vs arena for the ultimate WM venue. Some say stadium and some say Arena.

3:00 AM: This is still going?

3:01 AM: WrestleMania goes Hollywood. Tickets sold out in 1:15 seconds?

3:03 AM: John Cena is being compared to Hulk Hogan. Talk to me when Cena makes a film as good as No Holds Barred.

3:04 AM: Vince says, "America the Beautiful is majestic and so is Wrestlemania."

3:06 AM: Saliva performed at a WM and this documentary would have been a sham if they didn't take the time to recognize that. I would like to thank the producers for fitting it in.

3:08 AM: In Orlando, the WWF had to decide between a 14,000 seat arena or the Citrus Bowl. They went for the Cirus Bowl and dumped millions and millions (their words) to make the venue presentable for the event.

3;10 AM: Floyd Mayweather beat The Big Show by Knockout in a NO DQ match? I am sorry I missed that.

3:12 AM: When are they going to talk about when Chris Benoit won the WWF Championship at a WM?

3:13 AM: WM25, I could be wrong but I think I watched this. If not, I need to check out the HBK vs. Undertaker match. It seems bad ass. I wonder if  it's on one of the HBK DVD's I own.

3:16 AM: I just checked and Undertaker vs. HBK at WM25 is on the My Journey DVD that I have. Sweet.

3:17 AM: The WWF equivalent to the 56 game hit streak is Undertaker's undefeated streak at WM. Great debate, should it end or should it go on forever? Personally, I hope it goes on forever. Unless they bring back Steve Keirn to resurrect the Skinner character, I can't think of anyone worthy of breaking it.

3:20 AM: It seems like they are winding this down. I missed whatever they said about WM26 but I'm sure it was as good as round, firm. real, tits.

3:21 AM: Triple H didn't get as much airtime as I thought he might.

3:22 AM: Narrator: "Wrestlemania is a showcase of the immortals." The picture fades to black.

  • Overall I give the Documentary a B-. They could have focussed way more of the information on tidbits we didnt know and less of what we already know (like who won the Jake the Snake v Honkey Tonk match at WM3).
  • Not enough Jesse Ventura. The story suffers. He was in the booth for the first 8 of these. It didn't make sense to not use him at all until  quote 2/3 in about celebrities.
  • Where was Hulk Hogan? He didn't say much either.
  • Donald Trump should have got his head shaved bald.
  • Imagine how awful it would have been if the internet was around to spoil the winner of Steamboat v. Savage.
  • The next time I write about Wrestling, I will be re-booking WM4, and you will be amazed how great it could have been.
  • I am too tired to edit this. Take the typos as they are and I will fix them when I wake up tomorrow.
  • Say goodnight Brees

Book Club, March Madness, The Links

Book Club

One of my favorite things about the book club this month is reading the Forward and Introduction in each edition. The forward is always written by the series editor, Glenn Stout (Appearing on the April, 5 edition of The Sports-Casters). The introduction is written by the guest editor. The guest editor is the true star of each edition of the series. Here is how I understand the book to be put together. First, Glenn reads just about every piece of sports writing published during the given calendar  year. They he passes of what he feels are the best 75 or so to the guest editor. The guest editor then picks out the best 25 or so and orders them as you see in the book. The last job of the guest editor is to write the introduction.

I love these introductions. Just think about the people who have written them in the past, Peter Gammons, Buzz Biisinger, Mike Lupica, Rick Reilly, and Michael Lewis.

Right now, I am flipping through the 2006 edition of the series and was immediately sucked in by the introduction that Michael Lewis  wrote. Michael Lewis has often been called the Michael Jordan of non-fiction writing. His range is unlike any writer I know of. He has written New York Times best-sellers about finance, baseball, football, and the stock market. He has authored a novel that turned into a #1 Movie and a short story in the New York Times that was featured on 60 Minutes.

I am going to spend the next few days reading what Michael Lewis thinks was the Best American Sports Writing in 2006. He promises in his introduction that the collection has a vast range of articles with subjects like cheerleading, poker, football, and baseball great Rickey Henderson.

I was excited to see that the first article in the collection is one written by New Orleans Saints beat reporter JefF Duncan. Jeff spend most of 2006 writing about the re-building of New Orleans.

Another exciting aspect of the 2006 book is that former guest of The Sports-Casters,  L. Jon Wertheim is published. We have has so many great writers on the podcast that it seems I cant open a Best Sports Writing collection without at least one former guest of The Sports-Casters.

March Madness, Quite Mad after a Few Hours

As I write this blog, the first day of the NCAA Tournament is 3/4 of the way done. Four games have been decided by two points or less and that is only  game shy of the record. Some things went as planned, Pitt, Florida, UCONN, and BYU all skated to blow out victories. The morning session started with a bang. West Virginia survived a scare from first round winner, Clemson. Butler provided the first buzzer beater of the tournament to crush a game Old Dominion team. Seconds later, Morehead St. wrecked a whole bunch of brackets by eliminating Rick Patino's  Louisville team. Kentucky just escaped Louisville's fate with a 2 point victory over the smart kids from Princeton.

The changes that CBS has made to the coverage of the tournament are proving to be fantastic. In the past CBS woud take the excitement hostage and sometimes let us see it and sometimes not. This year, all 67 games in the tournament are on television. The times of the games are staggered perfectly so you almost never have to take a look at first half basketball. March Madness on Demand is still available to watch games on the iPad, the iPhone, or the computer. A college basketball fan couldn't ask for more from the coverage of the tournament this year.

The best part of the tournament remains Luke Winn @ The Tournament.

I owe everyone some links:

  • Neil Best spent the first day of the tournament at CBS Studios
  • Thuuz game the Penn St. vs Temple game a 96 on the excitement meter.
  • Vincent Scarsella has signed with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL.
